I saw at the tail end of Today Tonight they are doing another "disgruntled British migrants" story Thursday night. I have to say that the last one with "John" (rightly or wrongly), did not appear to evoke much sympathy from folk that I work with.
Be interesting to see how the story is presented and what reaction it provokes. :?

Whats this ones problem??? Can I be bothered to watch? John didnt get much symapthy from people I spoke to either. It would have been ok if he had something valid to moan about, like, "I have come here to do a job on the list, but cant because I am a temp res, and no one will employ me" ............

similar sort of lead to the other one....."promises by immigration not kept", etc
It seems to be SA focused from what I could tell by the ad

I guess it might be a different angle/problem from the other story....there certainly seems to be things happening that might be viewed as unfair. Hopefully it won't turn out to be a "whinging pom" story. The last story was not explicitly "whinging pom", but the notion that "John" couldn't get a job which suited and might not be able to build his brand new house certainly struck chords with a few people.

anyways....will see how it goes...........

I've just caught the ad this morning and it appears to be focusing on 2 english families.
One comments that "I didn't come here for this kind of life" or words to that effect and the other one was saying "they call it the land of milk and honey but it think it's the land of something (didn't catch what) and bulls***".

So, we'll just have to wait and see. If anyone catches it - I'll be at work - would be interested to know what they have to say.

Not much to tell really, they didn't go into much detail about their visa, they said that they were struggling, they also showed the guy from the previous show but to be quite honest I'm no wiser about their situation after watching it !

i think one couple came out on the wifes student visa and the hubby was led to believe that he could work as normal and be the main income but has now been told that he is only allowed to work a max of 20 hrs a week.
It was all very vague so i could have got it wrong. :?

I missed it too...shame... If this is the case as R&3 says, then it sounds like a case of not researching the visa properly. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but even I know the worker on that Visa can ony work 20 hrs. I am sure if I had had that visa I would have found that out before accepting!

PS and if I had been stupid enough not to, then I for sure would not go on TV and tell the world what a d*** I have been!!!

R&3 got it right and yes Sarah, even I know the 20 hour rule on the student visa - not much sympathy there. There was also a couple where 3 jobs had fallen through for the hubby so it looked like they might not fulfill the requirements of their visa but she was working - don't know what visa they were on. There was some politician going on about the government having changed the goalposts along the way but it's terrible journalism on Today Tonight so they never made it clear EXACTLY where the government had mislead people - and of course there were tears involved (I hate that kind of reporting and it rarely induces sympathy in me I'm afraid).

I'm not sure I would uproot my family and move to the other side of the world with nothing more than a Student Visa. These people that are going to the press are giving us migrants a bad name. I can just see a typical aussie family watching today tonight shouting at the TV and telling us all to F---off back home!!

There's nothing TT likes more than a follow up story. Has anybody on here thought of putting themselves forward and telling their story. That it is stressful, expensive, frustrating and bloody hard work, but there are some benefits when it all comes together.

We leave for Adelaide in just 7 days on a student visa, unfortunatly we haven't been in the lucky position to qualify for any PR or SIR visa - this is our only chance of a shot at a life in Oz. However I agree with you regarding they should have known what they are getting into, and they should have been better prepared for the visa restrictions. We are more fortunate that I am studying for a masters degree therefore my OH can work full time, but even if this doesn't work out I certainly wouldn't winge about it on TV. Student visa's are a gamble, however we have done a major amount of research (I have 3 kids and haven't taken this on lightly) and we are extremely confident of gaining PR eventually. I do feel that student visa's are seen as the poor relative to any other temp visa, when except for certain restrictions (in some cases) it no different to an SIR. But I agree its no good blaming a system when its your own lack of research that has let you down.

It was all something to do with the government changing the visa requirements after visas have been granted and moving the goal posts so to speak after people had arrived here having spent a colossal amount of money to emigrate. One guy said his wife now had to have 12 months work experience to satisfy the visa requirements, whereas if they were still in the UK they could have just sat an English test to get the points back up to what they were granted in the first place (or something like that). Basically the Oz govt are retrospectively changing the terms of visas after grant and arrival.

I was more stunned by the new couple on there, his resemblance to my hubby was slightly disturbing, although my hubby is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay sexier :slurp
